OUR CORE VALUES
& GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Access to Healthy Lifestyle:

we prioritize the health of our minds, bodies, and souls.

Economic and Democratic Education:

we create opportunity for community self-determination through collective ownership, jobs and job training, and food literacy.

Collaboration:

we create common goals and work together to achieve them.

Integrity:

we preserve and uplift our culture and cooperative roots in Black communities.

Equity:

we identify and remove barriers that prevent individuals or groups from fully participating in the co-op.

Solidarity:

we commit to the mutual well-being of our Owners, partners, neighbors, and allies.

Black Leadership:

we affirm and develop the power and wisdom of Black leaders from our community.

CORPORATIONS VS COOPERATIVES

ALL ABOUT
THE MONEY.

In corporations, shareholders elect a board of directors that make decisions to maximize profits. The more shares owned, the more voting power the holder has.

Corporate shareholders are usually non-community members, so their primary interests are making money, not addressing the concerns and desires of their consumers.

ONE MEMBER,
ONE VOTE.

In cooperatives, member-owners democratically vote on important decisions and elect a board of directors made of fellow members, to represent their interests and oversee business operations.

Each member gets an equal voice, regardless of number of shares held in the business.

Access to Healthy, Nutritious Food:

Co-ops prioritize providing fresh, wholesome foods that support the well-being of the community.

Community-Centered Approach:

Co-ops are uniquely attuned to local needs, adapting to serve what matters most to their members.

Strengthening Local Connections:

By fostering partnerships and collaborations, co-ops build strong, supportive networks within the community.

Boosting Economic Activity:

Co-ops generate jobs and stimulate local business, contributing to a thriving local economy.

Empowering Community Wealth:

By keeping resources circulating locally, co-ops enhance economic power and resilience within the community.
