  • A food co-op is a collectively owned and cooperatively governed grocery store. Individuals who purchase a share of the co-op are called member-owners. Member-owners can democratically vote on important decisions and receive financial benefits from shopping.

  • Regular grocery stores are corporations designed to prioritize profit above all else.

When store owners are unhappy with their profit margins, they close down with little regard for the community's needs. In a cooperatively owned grocery store, the community members are the owners. This model strengthens support around the store and can help to build generational wealth.

  • The Austin Community Food Co-op will be a full-service grocery store with high-quality food and products. The store will also offer intangible benefits such as community wealth building, internal programming, and community partnerships.

  • The Austin Community Food Co-op will be owned by the community itself. Whoever purchases a share of the co-op will become a member-owner and have voting power.

  • Anyone can shop at the Austin Community Food Co-op, regardless of ownership status or residential address.
